The scientific name for this nighttime leaf movement is nyctinasty.
It sounds complicated, but the idea is actually simple.
As daylight fades, specialized cells located where the leaf joins the stem change their internal water pressure. This causes the leaves to slowly fold, droop, or close.
When morning arrives and light returns, the process reverses.
The leaves open once again, ready to capture sunlight.
It’s a quiet movement that often happens so gradually you barely notice it unless you’re paying attention.
Plants That Close Their Leaves
Once I learned about nyctinasty, I started recognizing it in several plants.

- Prayer plants (Maranta)

Since photosynthesis stops until morning, keeping the leaves fully open no longer provides much benefit.

However, it’s worth paying closer attention if:

- Yellowing becomes widespread
In those situations, the problem is usually related to lighting, watering, or temperature rather than the natural opening-and-closing cycle.

Some have already begun folding their leaves.
Others are slowly changing position as the room becomes darker.
